Many across the country will have a unique opportunity to witness a total solar eclipse on August 21, 2017.

This stellar event brings with it extreme highway congestion and heavy traffic on the interstates. The Missouri Department of Transportation has included these 9 tips to promote safer driving for those out and about during the event:

  1. Plan ahead and allow extra travel time to reach your viewing location.
  2. Don’t stop along the interstate and no parking on the shoulder.
  3. Please exit the highway to stop and view/photograph the solar eclipse.
  4. Don’t take photos while driving.
  5. Turn headlights on and do not rely on your automatic headlights.
  6. Don’t wear “eclipse glasses” while driving.
  7. Avoid travel during the eclipse or in the area of the main path if possible.
  8. Watch out for extra pedestrians along smaller roads. People may be randomly parking and walking alongside roads in the hour before the eclipse to get the best viewing.
  9. Check traffic conditions to avoid congestion or possible accidents.

Yeah, it may look like a bit of work. It may even not look so appealing with all of those pundits on TV jumping up and down and screaming at the market gyrations. Yet the fact remains that taking care of your personal financial future is your responsibility and yours alone. Unless and until you happen to hit the Big One with the Powerball lottery or some sort of odd windfall, the reality is you need to start putting money away, like right now.
